Family, Culture, and Community
By Joseph Allen
When you first think about the development of a child what comes to mind? Most may respond about the child’s education, the prestige of the school or how good of a teacher the child has. There are also other important factors that can contribute to child’s development. They are family, culture and community.

CultureCulture can be something that deals with the daily events in the home such as family activities and how the family interacts with each other, such as spiritual worshipping and observed holidays. The culture of the family can also be supportive of the child’s education by staying engaged in the child’s school activities, such as field day or helping chaperone a class field trip. When the family culture is supportive of a child’s education, like most culture traits it is something that will follow the child into adulthood and will be passed onto their children.

Community
Community plays an important role in a child’s development. It cannot all fall on the hands of the teachers and parents. The community must also make sure that the environment is one that enhances the development of the child and also offers assistance to parents. The community can help out by neighbors helping neighbors. For instance if a neighbor is aware that another neighbor has a newborn baby, they should lend a hand by offering to pick up a child that may go to the same school as their child. When it comes to community helping with development of children that live in it, I can only think of the African proverb “it takes a village to raise a child”.
